The short version
For most categories in 2026, eBay charges 13.6% of the total sale plus a $0.40 per-order fee ($0.30 on orders of $10 or less). Payment processing is included — there is no separate PayPal or card fee on top.
The final value fee (the big one)
This is eBay's main fee, and it surprises new sellers: it applies to the total amount the buyer pays — the item price, the shipping you charge, and any sales tax eBay collects. So a $50 item with $8 shipping is fee'd on $58, not $50.
| Fee | 2026 rate (most categories) |
|---|---|
| Final value fee | 13.6% of total sale (item + shipping + tax) |
| Per-order fee | $0.40 over $10 · $0.30 at $10 or less |
| Insertion (listing) fee | First 250 listings/month free, then $0.35 |
| International sales | +1.65% on top |
| Promoted listings | 2–20%, you choose — paid only when it sells |
Some categories differ: sneakers over $150 pay 8% with no per-order fee, guitars and basses pay 6.7%, and amounts above $7,500 drop to 2.35%. An eBay Store subscription lowers the standard rate (Basic store and up pay about 12.7%).
Worked example: a $50 sale
You sell a jacket for $50 and charge $8 shipping. eBay collects $3 in sales tax. You bought it for $12 and the label costs you $7.
- Total sale eBay sees: $58 ($50 + $8)
- Final value fee: 13.6% × $58 = $7.89
- Per-order fee: $0.40
- Your costs: $12 (item) + $7 (label) = $19
You keep: $58 − $7.89 − $0.40 − $19 = $30.71
That $3 of sales tax is collected for the tax authority — it's in eBay's fee base, but it was never your money.
The fee nobody warns you about
Charging the buyer $12 for shipping doesn't just cover your label — eBay takes 13.6% of that $12 too. Price it like the example above, or the "profit" in your head shrinks by a dollar or two on every sale. Across a month, that's real money.
Promoted listings: use them like a scalpel
You set the rate (2–20%) and pay only when the promoted item sells within 30 days of a click. They're powerful on stale listings — but on a fresh listing with healthy views, you're paying eBay for a sale you might have gotten free.
