How to Price Thrift Store Finds

The 3x rule, sold-listing checks, and offer-ready pricing — with a worked example.

The short version

Price thrift-store finds with one rule: only buy what you can realistically sell for at least 3x what it costs you. At 3x, fees and shipping still leave you a profit. At 2x, you're working for free. The math decides — not your gut.

Step 1: Check sold listings, not active ones

Active listings show what sellers hope to get. Sold listings show what buyers actually pay. On eBay, filter to "Sold Items" and look at the last 10–20 sales of the same item. Price toward the middle of what they sold for — not the top, not the outliers.

Then check sell-through: if 50 sold in the last month but 300 are listed, demand is thin and you should price to move, not to sit.

Worked example: a $5 jacket

You find a jacket for $5. Sold listings say it moves at $30, and you'll charge $8 shipping (label costs you $7.50).

  • Total eBay sees: $38 ($30 + $8)
  • Final value fee: 13.6% × $38 = $5.17, plus $0.40 per-order
  • Your costs: $5 (item) + $7.50 (label) = $12.50

You keep: $38 − $5.57 − $12.50 = $19.93

Same jacket, but you pay $5 and it only sells for $12: $20 − $3.12 − $12.50 = $4.38. Same listing work, same trip to the post office. That’s why 3x is the floor, not the goal.

Step 2: Price for the offer

Most buyers negotiate. If you need $30, list at $33–$35 so you can accept an offer and still clear your target. On platforms with offer buttons, a price with room to bargain sells faster than a "firm" price that feels take-it-or-leave-it.

Step 3: If it can't clear 3x, leave it

This is the hardest step and the one that separates profitable sourcing from a death pile. A $4 item that sells for $10 feels like a win — until fees and shipping turn it into $2 and it sits for 4 months. Walking away from thin deals is the most profitable thing you'll do at the thrift store.
